Based in Dubai and Virginia USA, ANHAM FZCO is a logistics and project management business operating contracts for public and private sectors and defense customers. The firm “specializes in providing services in underdeveloped and/or conflict zones,” Chief Information Officer Claudiu Iarca says.
Combining the latest technologies (such as In-Transit Visibility) with a deep appreciation of local customs and conditions, ANHAM has built a reputation for reliability. As its website says, “even in the most demanding environments, we always deliver."
For its operation in the remote areas of Afghanistan, ANHAM relied on satellite links to provide IT services. These were very expensive and provided only a slow service. Head of IT Infrastructure Nishar Kanakkayil explains, “The round trip takes 600-700 milliseconds. Running high-bandwidth applications just wasn’t feasible.”
As a provider to the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency, ANHAM was also required to comply with the new and higher security standards of the NIST Special Publication 800-171 regulations.
Partnering with Citrix Solution Advisor Diyar United Company, ANHAM chose the XenApp and XenDesktop Service and NetScaler Gateway Service through Citrix Cloud to provide secure, scalable IT services to ANHAM operations anywhere in the world.
“Diyar were really professional,” Iarca says. “We identified the solution and they delivered on time.”
Scalability that supports ANHAM’s future growth
“We are a project organization,” Kanakkayil says, “so it’s easier for us to work on an operating cost model where we can scale up and scale down as required. That was a primary reason for choosing Citrix Cloud.”
Citrix Cloud and Microsoft Azure work together to provide fast, scalable and secure access to ANHAM’s applications and data, wherever required. ANHAM plans to grow with additional logistics and construction projects in remote areas and the Citrix solution will support efficient growth.
“Deploying new users or new projects with Citrix Cloud is fast and convenient,” Iarca says. “Often our projects have very short mobilization times. We wouldn’t have time to procure hardware, then install and configure software in the traditional way.”
With Citrix Cloud, Iarca and his team can actively support ANHAM’s strategy for future growth through new projects. “Going forwards, this is our delivery platform,” he explains. “We see Citrix as our major technology partner. Citrix Cloud is something we trust. It’s a solid base on which we build our services.”
“The savings are substantial, maybe over $100,000 per site per year.”
ANHAM now delivers its core applications virtually to remote locations. Together, XenApp and NetScaler optimize bandwidth usage to deliver resource-heavy applications while minimizing the very high costs of satellite connections. “The savings are substantial,” Iarca says, “maybe over $100,000 per site per year.”
Ensuring data security and meeting U.S. government standards
Citrix supports ANHAM in protecting its data and, as a consequence, its people. Under recently introduced regulations, all U.S. Department of Defense contractors must meet stricter requirements for the security of Controlled Unclassified Information or risk losing their contract.
“NIST SP 800-171 is a comprehensive standard with many controls, but Citrix answers a big part of its requirements,” Iarca says. “That was another driver for enriching our Citrix setup.”
As Kanakkayil adds, “Citrix gives us compliance, security, and scalability.”
