Founded in 2000, DNA Ltd. is a Finnish telecommunications company that expanded in 2007 with the merger of six major telecommunications firms. Now the largest cable operator in Finland and the leading pay TV provider, DNA delivers to nearly 4 million customers a wide range of services, including high-quality voice (fixed and mobile), data and television. The company’s content offering is extensive, with more than 170 cable channels and the largest number of high-definition channels in Finland. The DNA Store, with 73 outlets, is Finland’s largest mobile phone retail chain.
The objective of DNA is to continue its systematic and steady growth in both the consumer and corporate markets. The DNA network is absolutely critical in supporting the continued expansion of services and subscribers. When the company recognized that it needed to replace network load-balancing equipment that was rapidly becoming obsolete, it saw an opportunity to improve reliability, scalability and flexibility at the same time.
To help meet its network and business goals, DNA replaced its previous load-balancing equipment with Citrix NetScaler SDX, creating an economical, resilient and easy-to-manage solution:
The new NetScaler hardware-based appliances optimize the delivery of both internal and external services, serving DNA customers as well as employees. “Citrix NetScaler is an economical and resilient way to provide support services for our broadband and TV services business,” says Jari Hietanen, network designer for DNA. “Because we can now use Layer 3 and dynamic routing, Citrix NetScaler enables us to maximize uptime of our services for our customers and employees.”
The implementation of NetScaler in the two datacenters creates an extremely robust network with superior failover capabilities that minimize downtime. “Our new redundant and resilient solution with Citrix NetScaler helps us make sure that all of our many services are always on for our customers,” says Hietanen. Layer 3 routing also provides greater security, control and scalability than the Layer 2 switching that DNA was using with its previous load-balancing solution.
The new network topology based on NetScaler also lays the groundwork for well-managed growth in both DNA services and the number of customers. “Finland is a large country, and our customers are spread across a wide area,” says Hietanen. “With Citrix NetScaler, we can continue to provide new services and expand our customer base in an extremely cost-effective and flexible way.”
By deploying NetScaler, DNA also improves its ability to optimize service delivery based on the needs of its various users and clients within its highly multitenant environment. NetScaler enables DNA to run completely independent instances with separate policies as well as isolate traffic flow and data paths among clients.
Hietanen sees great opportunities for the new network infrastructure to help the company meet the challenge of Finland’s unique topography and set the standard for customer service and innovation at the same time. The telecommunications leader can take advantage of the advanced virtualization capabilities of NetScaler to consolidate up to 40 independently managed NetScaler instances. “With a smart design, we can continue growing for many years using Citrix NetScaler,” says Hietanen.
